Welcome to the Southeastern Ohio Landowners Association website! This is an exciting time for landowners in southeast Ohio. Several weeks ago, I was asked to put together an association for landowners interested in maximizing their bargaining power during oil and gas leasing negotiations. At that time, I explained that I was in the process of putting together an experienced team to effectively handle the size and scope of the work.
Together with the Columbus-based Ohio law firm of Bricker & Eckler LLP we formed the Southeastern Ohio Landowners Association (the “Association”), which is a non-profit corporation created to help you better understand the oil and gas leasing process. Although I will be the local face of the Association, I am pleased and excited to announce that I will be helped by Bricker & Eckler LLP and Dr. Robert Chase, Chair of Marietta College’s Petroleum Engineering Department.
Together, our goal is to provide you with capable, independent legal and technical assistance to obtain the best possible results for you and to protect your interests. Team members are myself, Dr. Bob Chase, Glenn Krassen (a partner with Bricker & Eckler with more than 30 years of oil and gas law experience), and two other lawyers with Bricker & Eckler LLP (Greg Lestini and Matt Warnock).
Unlike other landowner associations there is no cost to participate in the Association. All legal and consulting fees will be paid solely from the up-front bonus payment made to the landowner by the oil and gas company. This means participating landowners will receive the rest of the up-front bonus payment as well as the full amount of their royalties, and will not be responsible for any costs and expenses incurred by the Association, its attorneys, or Dr. Chase.
To be eligible for participation in the Association, you need to own your “deep well” mineral rights and have no existing oil and gas lease on your property. To participate in the Association, please fill out and sign the Landowner Representation agreement between you and the Association which is identified on this website.
To help you better understand the Association sign-up process, and oil and gas leasing, we have the following materials available on this website: (i) biographies of our team members; (ii) a one page summary of key considerations when negotiating an oil and gas lease; (iii) background information on Bricker & Eckler’s oil and gas experience; (iv) an agreement between you (the landowner) and the Association; and (v) a powerpoint presentation on Marcellus and Utica shale development in Ohio.
To achieve the best oil and gas lease terms obtainable in the market for landowners in Guernsey, Monroe, Morgan, Noble and Washington counties – negotiating the highest economic value possible with extensive protections for the land.
Through collective strength and action, the Southeastern Ohio Landowners Association, Inc. will advocate protections for landowners and their property, while striving to secure superior economic terms for the leasing of deep oil and gas rights through direct negotiations with the most qualified oil and gas company.
